THE PROBLEM
Most education systems in the world today, especially in Africa, exist to train students to work in basic public administrative roles. While the pitfalls of the existing, pervasive education system have been well-documented by many renowned African scholars for years, few have tried to enact real change in the system.
The current system of education rewards students who can understand and reproduce facts. These students, as well as the few who inherently have strong critical thinking skills, rise to the top. However, the majority of students in the middle and bottom aren’t encouraged to problem solve. The teaching style does not provide coaching or foster an environment to explore and innovate. The result is a small group of high achievers succeed in this outdated education system, while most are left to struggle.
Sadly, despite much academic discussion about improving the system, very little, if anything, has been done to invest in the physical and human infrastructure necessary to truly change the system. Until now.
